Scenario:
You are the manager of a public health team focused on child health. For several years legislation has been in place in your province requiring children to wear helmets when they ride their bicycles. From a ‘street view’, it appears that there is wide variability in helmet use amongst riders of all ages in the community. Members of a local parent council have brought concerns about the low level helmet wearing to the attention of the public health staff. These citizens are asking what can be done to increase the use of bike helmets by young children in the community. In addition, the local newspaper recently ran a story highlighting several incidents of head injuries among young cyclists in the past year in which helmets were not used. This issue was raised at a regional school health meeting that you recently attended. You have offered to report back to the group at the next meeting about the effectiveness of interventions to address this issue.
Your goal is to quickly locate high quality and relevant research evidence to share with the group. You come across this on-line learning module to assist you in working through the process of evidence-informed decision making.
