PRISM model to integrate research into practice

Feldstein, A. C. & Glasgow, R. E. (2008). A Practical, Robust Implementation and Sustainability Model (PRISM) for integrating research findings into practice. The Joint Commission Journal on Quality and Patient Safety, 34(4), 228-243.

Description

The Practical, Robust Implementation and Sustainability Model (PRISM) helps to identify factors needed to successfully implement research in practice settings and to measure success. This framework looks at how intervention design, external environment, organizational characteristics and the intended population influence intervention effectiveness when implementing evidence-based practices.

PRISM was developed using three models: the Chronic Care Model, the Model for Improvement and the RE-AIM framework. The model is a useful framework to conceptualize, implement and evaluate evidence-based programs and policies.

Steps for Using Method/Tool

The Practical, Robust Implementation and Sustainability Model (PRISM) model includes key elements to consider when implementing evidence-based practices (Table 3, p. 235) and key questions to enhance implementation and sustainability for each domain (Table 4, p. 239–240). The domains include:

  • Program (Intervention) – organizational and population perspectives of the intervention
  • External environment
  • Implementation and sustainability infrastructure
  • Recipients – organizational and population characteristics

Implementation case studies are provided in Table 2 (pages 231–232).
