Description

This review identifies the strengths and weaknesses of quality assessment checklists to critically appraise economic evaluations in health care.

Steps for Using Method/Tool

The main findings of this systematic review include:

  • Only some of the checklists have been tested for validity and reliability.
  • Most checklists assessed some of the identified important criteria, such as description of the target population, choice of alternatives, study questions, study design, measurement, valuation, outcome identification and outcome measurement.
  • Different checklists are appropriate for assessing the quality of different types of economic evaluations.
  • The Consensus on Health Economic Criteria and the Drummond checklists are appropriate tools to appraise economic evaluations conducted alongside effectiveness studies and as part of conducting systematic reviews.
